Melvin has lived on farms in the Tabor-Warren areas during his youth. He remained single. He moved to Warren and lived with his parents, caring for them in their senior years. They lived on 4th Street, in Warren, Minnesota. Melvin farmed all his his life.

Uncle Mel (Melvin Leonard Vanek) died July 24, 2003 at Riverview Hospital in Crookston.Melvin was born on October 28, 1917 at Warren, Minnesota, the son of Edwin and Julia (Myerchin) Vanek. He grew up in Warren, attended rural Polk County and Warren schools. As a young man he worked the CC Camp in Washington State before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1941. Melvin served in the European-African-Middle East theaters before his honorable discharge in 1945. Mel remained single and took care of his parents farm until late in his years when he moved to Crookston and thats where he spent the last of his days.
